FAQs

We welcome your questions, and you might find most of your answers here!

What is stump grinding, and how does it work?

Stump grinding is a process that uses a specialized machine with a rotating cutter wheel with carbide blades  to grind a tree stump into wood chips, usually 6–12 inches below ground level.

How is stump grinding different from stump removal?

Stump grinding addresses the parts of the stump above ground and up to 12 inches below ground and turns it into mulch, while stump removal involves pulling the entire stump and roots out, causing more disruption to the landscape and often leaving  a large hole on the property.

How deep do you grind the stump?

Typically, we grind 6–12 inches below ground level, depending on your needs (e.g., replanting vs. covering with grass).

Can you remove the tree roots along with the stump?

Stump grinding includes grinding any surface roots in the area of the stump.

How long does the stump grinding process take?

Most stumps take 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the size, location, and number of stumps.

Do I need to be home during the stump grinding service?

No, as long as we have clear access to the stump and you’ve provided instructions in advance.

Will you remove the wood chips after grinding?

We can either leave the mulch for you to use or haul it away for an additional fee.

What should I do with the area after the stump is removed?

You can fill the area with soil and plant grass, flowers, or shrubs. If you plan to plant a new tree, we recommend choosing a different spot to avoid issues with the old root system.

Will stump grinding damage my lawn or property?

Our equipment is designed to minimize impact on your lawn, but minor indentations may occur. We take precautions to protect surrounding areas.

Can stump grinding damage underground utilities?

Yes, if not properly checked. So we take the extra step of checking with Dig Safe so we can identify and mark underground utilities before we start the grinding process.

Is stump grinding safe for my pets and children?

Yes, but we advise keeping pets and children indoors or at a safe distance during the process due to flying debris and noise. For safety, keep pets and children away from the work zone to prevent accidents during the grinding process.

How much does stump grinding cost?

Pricing depends on the stump diameter, number of stumps, location, and depth of grinding. Get a FREE QUICK ESTIMATE, or contact us if you have more questions about cost.

Do you offer discounts for multiple stumps?

Yes! We provide a 25% discount if you have multiple stumps on the same property.

How soon can you schedule my stump grinding service?

We usually schedule jobs within a few days to a week, depending on our workload and weather conditions. Contact us and we’ll get right back to you!

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes! We are fully licensed and insured for your protection and peace of mind.

Do I need to clear the area around the stump?

We always check the immediate area before we begin our work, but you can help if you wish by removing rocks, debris, yard ornaments, furniture, or any objects near the stump to give our crew enough space to work safely and efficiently.

Do I need to notify you of underground irrigation lines (sprinklers) in advance?

Yes, it’s best if you mention and mark these features in your yard, as this will help prevent accidental damage during grinding.

What about access to the area leading to and near the stump(s)?

It’s a great help to us and saves time if you help ensure the stump grinding equipment can reach the stump, especially if it’s in a fenced backyard. Unlock gates, move vehicles, or remove any obstacles in narrow passageways.

Do I need to inform tenants or residents (for property managers)?

If you’re managing a rental or commercial property, notify tenants or residents about the scheduled work to avoid disruptions and ensure safety.

What about the removal of the debris after grinding?

For an additional cost we will haul away wood chips and debris as stump grinding and haul away are different services.

What about noise and dust?

Stump grinding can be noisy and create dust or wood chips, so consider closing windows and informing neighbors if necessary.

What can or should I plan to do with the space afterwards?

You can decide in advance if you’ll plant grass, install landscaping, or use the area for another purpose, so you can discuss with us any extra preparation needed.
